Urban Landscapes - Abandoned Spaces
“Endlessly fascinating, empty, decaying, abandoned buildings and spaces: long-lost memories.
Nature reclaims neglected spaces - there is a constant battle between nature and man-made.
My urban paintings and drawings are devoid of figures, but a strong sense of human presence is suggested by the things people leave behind. I strive to capture this human connection in my work; the absence of people evoking a sense of loss and change..
Faded memories along with old paintwork and signage - broken monuments to a previous existence: why has this building been abandoned? what happened to the communities who lived and worked there, for whom the houses and factories were built? what is their story? The drawings and paintings are a metaphor for the fast-changing world we live in - faltering economies, unstable times, the inevitability of progress: the ever-changing world in which we live.
I have documented these surviving ‘monuments’ to preserve their memory and create a connection with history, not in a nostalgic sense - I see character and interest in the crumbling architecture and create ‘building portraits’.
These works are in acrylic, oil, pastel and graphite.”
All sizes are approximate. Some pictures are framed/glazed, some mounted, some unframed and unmounted. Please enquire for availability/prices.
